The Institute for Civil Society Studies
The Institute for Civil Society Studies at Ersta Sköndal University College is primarily centred on civil society. As well as looking into organisations, we above all examine activities and performance with focus on the social dimensions of civil society. Other areas of research are trust and social vulnerability. The pioneering character in the Swedish context of some of this research has given the Department a leading role in research on non-profit organisations and voluntary work in Sweden.
Organisation: At this time (the beginning of 2010) the research group consists of 20 persons, amounting together to 13 full-time research posts. The composite phenomenon that is civil society and its great social significance demands a research alignment of multidisciplinary character. This is achieved partly through careful project design and partly through a purposeful recruitment of co-workers from different research fields, such as social work, sociology, political science, theology, history, social anthropology, and cultural geography.
The Institute endeavours to create and maintain good, long-term relations with research departments at other universities. At present we have collaborations with, among others, Stockholm University, Lund University, Uppsala University, Linköping University and Åbo Akademi University, Aalborg University, Justus-Liebig Universität Giessen, Tilburg University and University of California, Berkeley.
